SEO basics: 7 essentials you need for optimizing your site.

Here we’ll take a look at the basic things you need to know in regards to search engine optimisation. Follow these suggestions to improve your search engine optimization (SEO) and watch your website rise the ranks of Google.

1. Page speed

Page speed refers to the page load time, the time it takes to fully display the content on a specific page. Not only does your audience appreciate a site that loads quickly, but so does Google!  You can evaluate your page speed with Google's PageSpeed Insights.

2. Page URL

Create a unique page title for each page that reads naturally and effectively communicates the topic of your page that is both short and informative. A well-crafted URL provides both humans and search engines a good indication of what the destination page will be about. You’ll want this page to be discovered by the right people, so you will want to incorporate some keyword research and include the relevant terms. The MOZ Keyword Explorer is great for this process.

3. User-centric

Create pages for users, not for search engines. Think about what makes your website unique, valuable, and engaging. Create valuable, relevant, and original content that engages users and that is relevant to their search intent. The better your content is absorbed and understood by both your users and crawlers, the more visibility your site will have.

4. Flat vs. deep site structure

A flat site structure benefits users and makes it easier for search engines to index your website. As a general rule, all content should be accessible through a maximum of 1-3 clicks from the home page and the sitemap page.

5. Organized site structure

When visitors intuitively navigate a website, that site tends to convert better. The better your site structure, the better your chance of ranking higher in the search engines. Structure your site in a way that makes it easy for users to find the content they need. Navigation should be intuitive for visitors and reflect your customer journey. Break down your content and categories in a way that makes logical sense for crawlers and users. Plan your site hierarchy before you build your site.

6. XML Sitemap

A Sitemap is an XML file that lists URLs for a site along with additional metadata about each URL so that search engines can more intelligently crawl the site. XML-Sitemaps Generator is a sitemap generator I use often.

7. Site indexation

All of the on-site optimizations in the world won’t help your site if Googlebot and other crawlers aren’t finding your content in the first place.  Submit your sitemap to Google using the Search Console Sitemaps tool.
